It’s National Heart Month and a group of patients with cardiovascular disease are taking part in a drug research trial that could help reduce recurring heart attacks and strokes.
There are 281 patients recruited to the Oxford University-led trial at Broomfield and Southend hospitals and it is due finish next year.
The drug, called Inclisiran, has already been shown to reduce bad cholesterol. It’s now being used as another treatment for patients to take along with, or instead of, statins, which is medication used to lower cholesterol.
Tracey Camburn, Lead Research Nurse, said: “Research is vital for improving the care of our patients, and those who are cared for in a Trust committed to research, like ours, have better outcomes.
“This research is changing the landscape on how patients with high cholesterol are treated. As a result, we now have a specialised cholesterol service dedicated to helping patients across mid and south Essex.
“We are grateful for everyone who takes part in these studies and gives up their time to make treatments better for future generations.”
One of those patients is John Gibson, 61, from Braintree, who has been taking part in the trial since it began.
John had five heart attacks at 40 years old and has had many complications with his health over the years, including high cholesterol.
He said: “Having had so many challenges with my own cholesterol and heart disease over the years, I am delighted to be a part of this important trial.
“I’ve had many devices and stents fitted into my heart over the years, and it would be lovely to think that this drug could prevent others from going through as much surgery as I’ve had.”
