The NHS in mid and south Essex is delivering a free 12-month programme, which provides low calorie diet treatment for people who are above a healthy weight and living with type 2 diabetes.

- improve their diabetes control,
- reduce diabetes related medication,
- and even achieve remission (no longer have diabetes)

The NHS Type 2 Diabetes Path to Remission Programme isn’t suitable for everyone and there are some eligibility requirements.
To be eligible, you must be:
- aged between 18 and 65 years old,
- not be pregnant or planning to get pregnant,
- have a confirmed diagnosis of type 2 diabetes within the last 6 years,
- be motivated to change your lifestyle and can commit to a12-month programme
There are some other factors which need to be considered which your GP practice team will discuss with you.
How it works
If eligible, you will be given low calorie, meal replacement products for up to 12 weeks, which add up to around 800-900 calories per day.
You will receive helpful resources and ongoing support from coaches, which can be accessed at a local venue or digitally, including help to reintroduce healthy and nutritious food.
You will continue to be supported by your local GP practice, for example if medicines need to be changed.
