Teething can be challenging for both parents and children. Your baby may start teething from around 6 months old, though it varies from child to child.
Signs of teething:
- Red and swollen gums
- Excessive drooling
- Irritability or restlessness
- Chewing on hard objects
How to help:
- Provide safe teething toys
- Offer a clean, cold washcloth to chew on
- Gently rub your baby’s gums with a clean finger
- Use a teething ring that’s been cooled in the fridge (not frozen)
- If needed, speak to your pharmacist about suitable pain relief options
When to seek help:
If your baby has a high temperature, diarrhoea, or seems particularly unwell during teething, contact your GP or NHS 111 as these aren’t typical teething symptoms.
