Working in Thurrock
I am born and bred in Thurrock. After working as a London GP for 5 years, I returned to serve the diverse and vibrant community I grew up with and to raise my young family.
Thurrock is a friendly place where you can truly experience the full breadth of general practice. I thoroughly enjoy delivering continuity of care to young people, the elderly and generations of families that have resided in Thurrock for many years.
Much like its residents, I found the Thurrock primary care community close knit and supportive. This enabled me to develop my portfolio, starting with representing colleagues on the Local Medical Committee which I chaired for 6 years. My day-to-day working also changed from locum GP through to salaried and GP partner today at Orsett Surgery.
Working with the LMC and GP partnership experience gave me the confidence to lead Stanford-le-Hope Primary Care Network – a group of six practices – for three years. And recently, I was appointed Clinical Director for Thurrock Alliance.
Therefore, I can state with great confidence that Thurrock can easily be the exciting launch pad for enthusiastic GPs who are either starting their professional journey or looking for a refreshing reset!
Dr Manjeet Sharma,
GP Partner, Orsett Surgery
Clinical Director for Thurrock Alliance
Want to work somewhere where you can see your career develop rapidly and make a real tangible difference to the lives of your patients? Work in Thurrock!
Thurrock’s very diverse both in terms of the patient population and the GP workforce and an exciting place to be working in. It’s also very easy to commute to, with great road links.
There’s a strong team spirit amongst the PCNs and plenty of drive and ambition to improve primary care delivery for our patients.
Personally, I’ve been here for four years, and I work with amazing, supportive, driven and caring colleagues. So far, I’ve seen my career progress faster than I expected and have enjoyed *nearly* every minute of it. (We have had the small matter of the COVID-19 pandemic to work through.) Working in Thurrock is hard work (where isn’t in primary care now?), but it’s rewarding, with great teams and grateful patients. I’m excited by the direction primary care in Thurrock is moving in and I’m looking forward to facing the challenges ahead as a team.
Dr Tim Hodge,
GP Partner, Hassengate Medical Centre
I’m in my final months of GP training and plan to work in Thurrock as it’s been an enjoyable experience with ample support and resources with opportunities to expand my portfolio. I have explored my interests in digital health and innovation through networking and participated in the local digital transformation project. Such opportunities are hard to come by for a trainee without the uplifting support from the integrated workforce, as provided in Thurrock.
Thurrock has a wide demographic population and in recent years welcomed more younger working professionals who are open to new services and innovations in the NHS. Thurrock is attractive for its suburban lifestyle with countryside, coastline, and city locations all within commutable distance.
I’m keen to join the new innovative fellowship program in Thurrock as a newly qualified GP to expand my interest in digital health alongside my regular clinical practise. Come join me!

About Mid and South Essex Integrated Care System
The Mid and South Essex Integrated Care System (MSE ICS) provides health and care to 1.2 million residents across the region.
Mid and South Essex Integrated Care System’s vision is for a health and care partnership working for a better quality of life in a thriving mid and south Essex, with every resident making informed choices in a strengthened health and care system.
Made up of two statutory bodies, the Integrated Care Board (ICB) – an NHS organisation responsible for strategic partnerships and new collaborative ways of working – and the Integrated Care Partnership (ICP) – a committee of stakeholder partners.
Across mid and south Essex there are four different ‘places.’ These are four geographical areas working to develop and deliver routine health and care community-based services. These partnerships are called ‘alliances’ and they will support the improvement of health, and wellbeing, tackling avoidable, unfair differences in health outcomes between different groups of local people.
In collaboration with health and care partners within the NHS, local authority, borough and district councils, Healthwatch organisations, voluntary and community sector associations, ambulance trust and primary care networks; MSE ICS is building upon the long history of collaborative working locally, to design and deliver services that will achieve better experiences and health and social care outcomes for people who live and work in our area.
